National Day of Action for same-sex relationship recognition beats target!
For immediate release: 14 August 2006

The National Day of Action for same-sex relationship recognition held yesterday saw over 2,000 people march on Parliament House in Melbourne. Around 55 couples undertook a mass commitment ceremony as part of Mid-Winta Vows, highlighting continued discrimination against people in same-sex relationships.

Co-convenor of the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (VGLRL) Ron Thiele addressed the crowd stating, “Equal love – recognition of our relationships - is good for individuals, good for families, good for society and good for the economy. Standing up for our love rights will lead to a better, fairer and stronger state, and country.”

After the event, VGLRL co-convenor Aly M said that “We are extremely pleased with the turnout. Melbourne’s gay and lesbian community have sent a powerful message to both State and Federal Governments about the level of support in the broader community for change.”

Although protestors were marking the second anniversary of the Howard Government’s Marriage (Amendment) Act which denied same-sex couples access to marriage, red balloons and a festive atmosphere marked the celebratory event.

At the reception to the event, Aly M committed “We will continue this event every year until formal relationship recognition for same-sex couples is achieved”.

The Melbourne contingent of the National Day of Action was the largest in the country, with other rallies taking place in Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart, Lismore, Blue Mountains, Wagga Wagga and Dubbo.

The National Day of Action in Melbourne was organized by Equal Love, the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby’s campaign for same-sex relationship recognition.
