Dear Lobby members and subscribers,

Happy New Year!

With the fabulous Midsumma festival kicking off this Friday, there will be lots going on and lots of opportunities to get involved with the Lobby. Read on for more information about where we'll be and how you can get involved, as well as some other updates from your Lobby.

And don't forget, 2007 is a Federal election year, so we need to get active to put our interest on the agenda.

Aly M and Gerard Brody
Lobby Co-convenors

1. PRIDE MARCH THIS WEEKEND - SUNDAY 21ST JAN 2007!

The Lobby will be showing its colours at this Sunday's Pride March in St Kilda. We'd love you to join us... we're meeting on the corner of Lakeside Drive and Fitzroy Street in St Kilda at 4pm.

OR if you're in the city, you can meet at the Fed Square tram stop on Swanston St at 3.30pm to grab a tram with other keen beans! Lobby Co-convenor, Aly M, will be wearing one of the Lobby's new "I SEE GAY PEOPLE" t-shirts, so she shouldn't be too hard to spot! Find Aly to get directions and join the VGLRL/ Equal Love/ Love Makes A Family marchers!

The great new VGLRL t-shirts will be on sale on the day so bring cash! We will have free magnets and fliers to hand out as well :)

Feel free to make banners or signs, bring balloons or dress in rainbow colours!

For more information see www.pridemarch.com.au

2. WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR CARNIVAL

Carnival is the biggest event on Melbourne's queer calendar and it's coming up on Sunday 11 February. Thanks to those who have already responded to help out at the Lobby's stall at Carnival and it's not too late if you're still keen. If you can help out on the day or with pre-planning, please email Gerard on gbrody@vglrl.org.au.

The Lobby's stall will also be hosting a photographer who can take your photo with a message for our politicians!  The photos will be made available to you via our website for you to send to your politicians, demanding your rights be respected.  Visit our stall on the 11th to find out more.

For more information on Carnival check out http://www.midsumma.org.au/

3. RAINBOW FAMILIES ARE HAVING A PICNIC!

2007 will be a busy year for Rainbow Families with the final Victorian Law Reform Commission Report expected to be handed to the Attorney General in the early part of the year. So let's start the year off by having some fun!

RAINBOW FAMILIES PICNIC DAY
Sunday 4 February 2007

HAYS PADDOCK - East Kew
BYO picnic, drinks and ball games!

4. WANT TO BE FAMOUS?
The Equal Opportunity Commission is looking for gay and lesbian couples to photograph for promotional material.  If you're interested, contact Sharon King at sking1@gmail.com or 0438 037 831.

5. MELBOURNE CITY COUNCIL RELATIONSHIP REGISTER UPDATE
As reported in the last newsletter from the Lobby, The Melbourne City Council has approved the establishment of a 'Relationship Register' by which couples may declare, publicly or privately, the existence of their relationships.

The Lobby is currently drafting a submission in support of the proposal to present to all councillors.

COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMITTEE MEETING 13 FEBRUARY
As it is possible for any resident of the City of Melbourne to speak at council meetings for up to 3 minutes, we urge our community to appear at the meeting and tell their stories about the necessity of this register. Even though the scheme is provisionally approved, it will be valuable to have a large presence of people directly affected by the scheme to speak to it.
This item is on the agenda for Tuesday 13 February at 7:30pm. It would be great if you can make it along either to show your support, or to have your say.

6. HELP BUILD THE RIGHTS LOBBY THROUGH YOUR IDEAS AND CONTACTS
- Have you got networks or contacts with other groups you think the Rights Lobby could or should work with?
- Are there any organisations you'd like to see us working with?
If you answered YES to either of these, then the Alliances Working Group would love to hear from you!

The Rights Lobby is looking to build on its existing network of alliances to develop a strong network of allies behind the many submissions, policies or positions we put forward. The Alliances Working Group's first meeting for 2007 is scheduled for 6pm Monday 22 January at Three Degrees (bar) at the QV Centre on Cnr Lonsdale and Swanston St. To make things easier, Stephen will be wearing a bright yellow t-shirt and will grab a table outside.

If you'd like to tell us who you'd like to see us work with (either by providing an existing point of contact or by suggesting an organisation) or if you'd like to join the working group, contact Stephen Jones at alliances@vglrl.org.au for more information.

7. YOUNG LAWYERS TO LOOK AT RELATIONSHIP RECOGNITION

The Law Institute of Victoria's Young Lawyers Group are setting up a Same Sex Working Group to look at relationship recognition - stay tuned for more info...
