Labor’s lost political will: Greens

Star Observer I Author: Benn Dorrington

"Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby co-convenor Anna Brown said a commissioner was needed to deal with LGBTI concerns just like other appointed commissioners for areas such as race and sex.

“While this is a significant advance for LGBTI people, we need to ensure that that a Commissioner is given responsibility for dealing with our concerns and that broad exemptions for religious bodies do not undermine the effectiveness of these new legal protections, including the risk of watering down the rights of people in states where religious organisations are not permitted to discriminate to the same extent,” she said."

Government won’t budge on religious exemptions

Star Observer I Author: Alex McKinnon

Government won’t budge on religious exemptions

"Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby co-convener Anna Brown said the broad religious exceptions in the Bill were grossly inappropriate and out of step with contemporary Australian values.

“We are concerned about the level of engagement with the faith based community by the Prime Minister. We would like to see an opportunity for LGBTI groups to talk with the Prime Minister about the practical implications of the broad exceptions available for religious organisations,” Brown said.

“Most Australians would be unaware of the ability of businesses such as Sanitarium to discriminate against employees and customers."

ABC News

Anti-homophobia ads to air at AFL finals

The AFL has agreed to show anti-homophobia commercials at this weekend's preliminary finals, in response to an online campaign initiated by a gay Victorian footballer.

Jason Ball, 24, plays in the Yarra Valley Mountain District league and says he created the campaign to stamp out homophobia in the game.

His online petition has attracted more than 25,000 signatures in less than two weeks.

He says the AFL will air the No to Homophobia commercials on the big screen at tonight's match between Sydney and Collingwood and again at tomorrow's game between Hawthorn and Adelaide.

Male-on-male sexual harassment climbs

Male-on-male sexual harassment climbs

The Australian Human Rights Commission has released new research that indicates sexual harassment of men by men has increased over the last ten years, from seven per cent to 23 per cent.

Lobby Co-Convenor and No To Homophobia spokeswoman Anna Brown comments:

“It’s too soon to say if the high instance of male to male sexual harassment is homophobic or not,” she said.

“One would assume that at least a proportion of these instances of male-to-male sexual harassment would be driven by homophobia.”

“There’s no doubt that there’s more work to do to ensure that workplaces are free from sexual harassment including homophobic, biphobic and transphobic harassment.”

Footy fans to watch pro-gay ads

Star Observer

Footy fans to watch pro-gay ads

More than 100,000 football fans will watch an anti-homophobia commercial during both AFL Preliminary Finals this weekend.

The No To Homophobia TV commercials, featuring common situations of homophobic harassment, will be shown during both games held at ANZ Stadium and the MCG after a successful online petition swayed the AFL.

Openly gay Victorian country football player Jason Ball has collected over 25,000 signatures for his online petition for the AFL in less than two weeks.

The Yarra Glen player took a stand this month when he began the petition to convince the AFL to screen the No To Homophobia commercials at this year's Grand Final.
