Vic death certificate partnership status questioned

Victorian law does not recognise same-sex relationship as gay rights advocate Dennis Altman discovered recently upon the death of his partner, he explains in this article.

Altman said that Smith’s death certificate records recorded him as  ‘never married’ despite living together as a couple for more than two decades.

The Lobby's Convenor Anna Brown has responded to this;

“We need to ensure that LGBTI people and their relationships are treated respectfully and equally, particularly at this most difficult of times.”

Moves to strike gay sex records

The State government is considering a call for reform to remove criminal records from gay men. The impact of these convictions reverberate some thirty years after sex between men was decriminalised - in Victoria, in 1981. ''There is no mechanism to expunge gay sex convictions, and what we would like to see happen is for states like Victoria to adopt the approach taken in Britain,'' - Anna Brown, speaking in her role as Director of Advocacy & Strategic Litigation at the Human Rights Law Centre.
