2007 Federal Election - GLBTI Demands & Party Responses
The aim of the compilation of these responses is to assist the VGLRL membership and the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (GLBTIQ) communities of Victoria to be informed about the party's position on GLBTIQ issues.
In October 2007 the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (VGLRL) wrote to the leaders of all political parties contesting the 2007 federal election seeking commitment to end discrimination in all its forms.
The letter listed a range of demands to political party leaders, including:
- A commitment to implement the recommendations from HREOC's recent Same Sex Same Entitlements report;
- Enactment of national sexual orientation and gender identity anti-discrimination legislation;
- Non-discriminatory marriage and civil union reforms;
- Establishment of a GLBTI advisory committee to advise government on GBLTI issues;
- A foreign policy commitment to end gender identity and sexual orientation discrimination in all its forms;
- Better funding of the National HIV/AIDS strategy;
- A commitment to consult on a national charter of human rights and responsibilities; and
- Support for the "Brazilian resolution" at the United Nations on human rights and sexual orientation.
A federal government that addresses these issues will be truly inclusive and recognise non-discrimination as a core value.
The VGLRL believes that only a party that meets these demands can be worthy of our community's trust.
