FROM THE ANNUAL REPORT AS PRESENTED AT THE AGM, 22 SEPT 1998:

After only ten months we have established ourselves as the pre-eminent rights lobby for the lesbian and gay community in Victoria. This amazing achievement is in no small part due to the hard work and commitment of many people. We would like to begin our report with a few thankyous. Firstly, thankyou to all the members of the steering committee which provided us with a well considered and firm foundation. Secondly, thanks to all the members of the inaugural committee of management, Peter, Monica, Greg, Penny, David, Alanna, Shaun and Tony. The VGLRL could not have achieved so much without the support of key gay and lesbian organisations, particularly the VACIGMHC, ALSO Foundation, Homodefactos and Midsumma.

The VGLRL has placed a lot of emphasis on building the foundations of a successful organisation. Administrative issues, policies and procedure have occupied a significant amount of the committee's time as well as building a profile within our communities. With this in place, the VGLRL is set to begin its second year with the infrastructure it needs to continue building on our achievements to date.

n order to mobilise for political and policy change, the VGLRL needs to have strong links with all sections of the gay and lesbian communities. With this is mind, networking within our own communities has been a priority for the Co-Convenors.

We have a special relationship with the transgender community and look forward to the imminent launch of the new Transgender Rights Lobby (TRL). We believe strong links with groups such as the TRL makes our communities more powerful.

Building links with the broader political, policy and media networks has also been a priority. This has lead us into meetings with the Equal Opportunity Commission of Victoria (EOCV), Law Institute, and politicians from all political persuasions. We are also contacted regularly by the media, both straight and gay, for comment on a range of issues. While we have been planning for the future and building strong foundations, we have also responded to immediate issues as they have arisen.

Specifically, only three months after our formation, the Equal Opportunity Commission released their report into the discrimination experienced by people in same sex relationships. This prompted a flurry of media attention to the issue, which the VGLRL was prepared for and well positioned to respond to. We met with Jan Wade, the Attorney General, and the Shadow Attorney General, Rob Hulls, to discuss the EOCV's report Same Sex Relationships and the Law.

orkplace discrimination is a key area of discrimination for lesbians and gay men and ending discrimination in the workplace is an important area of our work. To this end the VGLRL worked in partnership with the NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby and the Australian Centre for Lesbian and Gay Research by administering a survey of the workplace experiences of gay men, lesbians and transgenders.

The calling of a Federal election with a short campaign necessitated immediate action from our fledgling election strategy working group. As this election looks like it is going to be close, the VGLRL took the opportunity to ensure that the concerns of the gay and lesbian community, particularly superannuation, immigration, HIVIAIDS & health, and federal anti discrimination legislation are on the agenda.

We've had an amazing year and achieved huge success, but this is just the beginning. Achieving equality and social justice for gay men and lesbians is not a short term project, and we are proud to have been able to channel such positive energy into something so important. Once again we would like to thank all those who have made this year so successful, and we look forward to your partnership in the year to come.
